I'm a little girl, playing outside, yet in my house I hear the angelic voice of my mother as she teaches singing to a student. I have been fortunate to hear such beautiful singing from her all my life, and if it weren't for her, I would never have gotten into opera.
Opera singing is a wonderful feeling; for a little while, you are someone completely different, wearing clothes you don't normally wear, thinking thoughts you don't normal think. It is a rush of adrenaline when the curtain goes up...a magical feeling as below you the orchestra floats their glorious sounds and lays them under your voice like a blanket...it is just such an incredible feeling. My very first opera character was Deborah Arden in the Golden Arrow, when I premiered the role. You can find more information on that performance on my page "working with Dennis Hyams".
Art songs are equally as intriguing, as you must make choices interpretation-wise off of a limited amount of music given to you; in an opera, you have a whole story before you, yet in an art song, the story comes from a page or two of piano and voice dialogue, and one must study both parts diligently to gather a sophisticated interpretation of the music. Broadway is dear to my heart, though I am not trained in the belting technique. However, this doesn't stop me from enjoying it!
